I create, therefore I am. When I am working on my art is when I am most complete. The sculptures and drawings I make originate from my emotions. They represent moments and movements in time. In my work I address the profound strength and beauty in women and in life.
I’ve been playing in the mud since I was a little girl. The very first sculpture I remember making was a cube out of silly putty when I was in nursery school. I am most comfortable and at home in my studio with a piece of clay in my hand surrounded by the world I create with my own sculptures.
I am influenced by the rawness and power of African Art, the melancholic, macabre quality of German Expressionist art, and I am completely enthralled with High Renaissance sculpture-especially Michelangelo, whose work I finally visited in Florence and Rome in the summer of 2006. When I encountered his magnificent sculptures I was overcome with emotion that I had never felt before. It was a transforming experience for me.
I teach ceramics full time at American River College in Sacramento, CA and I am also inspired by my students. Getting to know them, turning them on to clay and getting them in touch with their creativity is fulfilling.
I can never seem to get enough of working with clay. I always want more. I always need to create more. For me making art is first and foremost in my life and everything else follows. |
